At the ARC Industry Forum 2025, Greg Orloff of IIoT World sat down with Thomas J. Burke, the Global Director of Industry Standards at Mitsubishi Electric, to discuss the evolution of industrial connectivity, focusing on CC-Link technology and the role of Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) in unifying disparate industrial networks.

Challenges in Industrial Networking

Industrial environments are filled with disparate devices and networks, creating challenges in interoperability. Traditionally, each system—whether from Siemens, Rockwell, or Mitsubishi—required its dedicated physical wiring, increasing installation costs and complexity.

TSN addresses these challenges by providing an interoperable, unified network where multiple protocols can coexist. Originally developed for audiovisual research, TSN has been successfully adapted for industrial automation. It allows networks such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, and CC-Link to run seamlessly on a single network.

What is Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN)?

TSN is a breakthrough IEEE standard that enables deterministic communication over Ethernet. It allows low-latency, high-reliability data exchange across different industrial protocols, supporting real-time applications in:
